Why are my teeth sensitive?
Teeth sensitivity is often a result of your gums’ having slightly receded. This recession of the gum line exposes the underlying dentin, allowing water and food easier access to the sensitive nerve. There are a number of toothpastes, gels and even some dental procedures available to provide you with relief. Sometimes, other treatments may be necessary to resolve the issue.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a condition that occurs when bacteria surrounds the teeth and enters the gums. The gums may become irritated, inflamed and prone to bleeding. Proper flossing technique, a daily oral hygiene routine and regular professional dental hygiene visits can prevent the condition from worsening.
Why do I need a periodontal, or gum, treatment instead of just a cleaning?
A professional dental cleaning removes plaque, tartar and bacteria only from above the gum line and is sufficient for healthy gums with no infection or bleeding. Gum disease originates underneath the gums, so a regular cleaning will not clean this area. For patients with infected gums, we must perform a more thorough therapeutic treatment to rid the gums of the infection-causing bacteria. An antibiotic is also placed under the gums to ensure optimal healing.
Why doesn’t my insurance cover all the costs for my dental treatment?
Dental insurance is not really insurance at all, meaning it does not provide payment to cover the costs of a loss. Dental insurance is a money benefit, typically provided by an employer to help employees pay for routine dental treatment. The employer usually buys a plan based on the amount of the benefit and monthly premium costs. Most benefit plans cover only a portion of the total cost of dental treatment.
Why won’t my insurance pay anything toward some treatment services,
such as X-rays, cleanings and gum treatments?
Your plan contract specifies how many of certain types of procedures it will consider during a one-year period. It limits the number of X-rays, cleanings and gum treatments covered because these are services people use frequently. Our office never recommends treatment based on insurance limitations.
